Apple Trade In vs Cash: What the Up To Price Really Means
Apple Trade In pays in credit or an Apple Gift Card, and its up to price is a ceiling. Here is how to weigh it against cash before you trade in your iPhone.
On this page
When you buy a new iPhone, Apple offers to take your old one, and the number on the trade-in page starts with two small words: "Up to". Those words, and the form the value takes, are worth understanding before you decide.
This guide explains what Apple Trade In actually pays, what "up to" means, and how to compare it with a cash offer. One note first: iPhones.LA is an independent Los Angeles business and is not affiliated with Apple Inc.
How Apple Trade In works
Here is how Apple describes its program on apple.com.
- Where: you can trade in online or at an Apple Store. In a store, you need a valid photo ID.
- What you get: credit toward a purchase, or an Apple Gift Card. Apple doesn't pay cash.
- How the value is set: trade-in values vary with the condition, year and configuration of the device, and the actual value depends on the device you send matching the description you gave.
- If it doesn't match: Apple sends a revised value. If it's lower, you can accept it or reject it. If you reject it, the trade-in is cancelled and your old device is returned.
- If it isn't worth anything: Apple recycles it for free.
Apple's fine print also notes that sales tax may be charged on the full value of your new device purchase, so the trade-in credit doesn't necessarily reduce the tax you pay. That's worth a look at checkout.
What "up to" really means
The trade-in page shows its values as a figure after "Up to". That figure is the ceiling: what a device can earn when everything about it lines up, including its condition and its configuration.
Your phone might get that number. It might not. Scratches, a crack, or a smaller storage size all pull a phone below the top of the range. Many people read the up to price as the price, then feel shortchanged when the estimate for their actual phone comes back lower.
The fix is simple. Ignore the headline number and go through Apple's estimate with your own phone, answering the condition questions honestly. That gives you a real figure to compare. Our iPhone condition grades explained will help you judge your phone the way a buyer will.
Credit versus cash
This is the real decision, and it isn't about which number is bigger.
Apple Trade In value is credit toward a purchase or an Apple Gift Card. Either way, it's spent at Apple. That's perfectly fine if you're buying a new iPhone from Apple anyway and would spend at least that much there.
Cash is different. You can spend it on anything: rent, a bill, a different brand of phone, a used iPhone from our shop, or nothing at all. It lands in your pocket or your account, and you decide where it goes.
So the question to ask is: if both options were the same number, which would you rather have? For many upgraders, the answer is credit, because they're buying from Apple regardless. For others, money that can go anywhere is worth more than the same figure locked to one store.
Know your cash number before you decide
A trade-in decision is easier when you have two real numbers side by side. Here are our current cash offers for two popular trade-in models, by storage, unlocked and carrier locked.

Like any buyer's offer, ours moves with condition. Damage lowers the grade and the offer, and a battery at 79% health or below is a flat $20 off with us. For other models, see the value pages for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max, or get your exact estimate in seconds at /sell.
Now put the two numbers next to each other:
- Apple's credit is higher, and you're buying from Apple anyway: take the trade-in. That's a fair outcome, and we'd tell you the same across the counter.
- The numbers are close: decide on flexibility. Cash can be spent anywhere. Credit can't.
- Cash is higher, or you're not buying from Apple: sell for cash, then buy whatever you like with it.
A quick way to decide
| Your situation | What usually fits |
|---|---|
| Buying a new iPhone from Apple today | Compare Apple's estimate for your phone with a cash offer |
| Not buying anything from Apple | Cash |
| Phone has a cracked screen or back | Compare both, since damage moves every offer |
| Phone is still locked to an Apple Account | Neither, until you sign out |
| You have several old phones | A cash lot through our wholesale lot builder |
Timing the switch
If you sell for cash, you'll want your data safely on the new phone first. Set up the new iPhone, move your data across, and check that your number works on it. Then prepare the old phone for sale. Used phone values tend to slip over time, so once you've decided, don't let the old phone sit in a drawer. Our guide on when to sell your iPhone covers the timing in more detail.
Get the old phone ready, whichever you choose
Apple and any cash buyer both need the phone signed out and erased. Apple's own guide, what to do before you sell, give away or trade in your iPhone, lists these steps:
- Back up the phone to iCloud or your computer.
- If you have an Apple Watch paired with it, unpair the watch.
- Sign out: open Settings, tap your name, scroll down and tap Sign Out.
- Erase it: Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Erase All Content and Settings.
- If the phone uses an eSIM, choose to erase the eSIM when asked, once your number is working on the new phone. Your carrier can help if you're moving service.
Our guide on preparing your iPhone before selling covers the same steps with a few extra tips.
Selling to iPhones.LA for cash
If cash wins, here's how it works in Los Angeles and Orange County. Go to /sell, pick your device and answer four questions: model, storage, carrier lock and condition. Your estimate appears on screen as you answer. Verify your IMEI or serial number, then meet us at our secured facility or a public spot near you, or ship it with a prepaid label we send. You're paid the moment the phone checks out, in cash in person, by Zelle or Cash App (usually same day), or by PayPal.
There's no obligation at any point. If you're also weighing Best Buy, read Best Buy trade-in vs cash, and for every other option, see how to sell your iPhone in Los Angeles.

Answer four questions and your number appears on screen. No obligation, and you get paid the moment it checks out.
Frequently asked questions
Does Apple give cash for trade-ins?
No. Apple Trade In gives you credit toward a purchase or an Apple Gift Card, according to Apple's trade-in page. If you want money you can spend anywhere, you'll need to sell the phone instead.
Why is my Apple trade-in value lower than the up to price?
The up to figure is the most that model can earn. Apple says values vary with the condition, year and configuration of your device, so scratches, damage or a smaller storage size bring the estimate down.
Can I trade in my iPhone to Apple without buying a new one?
Apple's trade-in page says you can trade in for an Apple Gift Card as well as for credit toward a purchase. The gift card is spent at Apple, so it isn't the same as cash.
What happens if Apple revises my trade-in value?
If the lower revised value is fine with you, you accept it and the trade-in continues. If not, you can reject it, and Apple says it will cancel the trade-in and return your old device.
Should I trade in my iPhone or sell it for cash?
Trade in if you're buying from Apple anyway and its estimate for your actual phone is as good as a cash offer. Sell for cash if the cash offer is higher, or if you want money you can spend anywhere.
