ecoATM kiosks are a familiar way to turn a phone into cash in a hurry. They sit inside grocery and big-box stores around Los Angeles, and you can walk out with money after one visit.

A local buyer is the other fast option. This guide explains how a kiosk works, what it asks of you, what it's good at, and how its offers compare with ours. The comparison is live and dated, and we're upfront about what it shows and what it leaves out.

How an ecoATM kiosk works

Here is the process as ecoATM describes it on its own website.

  1. Start online or at the kiosk. You can describe your phone on ecoATM's site and lock in an offer with a drop-off code, or skip that and get an offer right at the kiosk.
  2. Connect the phone. The kiosk connects to your device and checks its make, model, battery and condition.
  3. Show your ID. You must be 18 or older with a valid driver's license or state ID. The kiosk scans your ID and takes your photo, and in some states it may take a thumbprint. ecoATM says a remote attendant compares the ID photo with your face before a transaction goes through.
  4. Get paid. If you accept, ecoATM pays you on the spot, in cash, or by Venmo or PayPal.

Two more points from ecoATM's own pages. It buys both carrier locked and unlocked phones, but it cannot buy a device with Activation Lock on, so you have to remove your iCloud account first. And it runs a post-inspection program where some devices qualify for a second payment after a later inspection.

What a kiosk does well

It's fair to give kiosks their due. For plenty of people, they're the right choice.

  • Speed. One visit, one offer, and you're paid before you leave.
  • Hours. A kiosk is available whenever its store is open, which often includes evenings and weekends.
  • No stranger. You don't have to arrange a meetup with anyone from an app.
  • No shipping. Your phone never goes in a box.

What a machine sees, and what a person sees

ecoATM's FAQ says its offer depends on the device model, storage, cosmetic condition and market value, assessed with diagnostic and AI tools. How their system weighs any particular scratch or scuff isn't something we can see from the outside, and we won't guess.

What we can tell you is what changes when a person checks the phone with you standing there. Someone holding it can tilt the screen and the back under a bright light, try Face ID, the cameras and the buttons, look at battery health, and, if the phone has been repaired, open the Parts and Service History under Settings, then General, then About. Then they can tell you what they found, and you can ask questions.

That conversation matters most for phones that sit between two grades. A light scratch is a grade B with us, while a cracked back is a grade C. When a phone is close to a line, you can ask why, and you can see the reason with your own eyes. Our iPhone condition grades explained lays out every grade.

How the numbers compare

We compare our cash offers with ecoATM's kiosk offers configuration by configuration. The block below is live and dated. It lists only the models where our offer was higher, so it isn't the whole picture, and on some phones the kiosk will pay as much or more.

On 457 of 490 unlocked configurations we compared, our cash offer was higher than ecoATM's kiosk offer. Where we paid more, the difference was a median of 55%.

Unlocked, top condition (flawless at ecoATM).

ecoATM figures read Oct 8, 2026; our offers as of Oct 14, 2026.

Two things a model table can't show are your phone's condition and its carrier lock. Our offer moves with both, and ecoATM says its offer depends on condition too, so compare your exact phone, not just the model name. You can see our current offers by storage and lock on the value pages for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

When the kiosk makes more sense

  • It's late in the evening and you need money tonight.
  • You don't live in Los Angeles County or Orange County.
  • The phone is older or low in value, and speed matters more to you than the last few dollars.
  • You'd rather not talk to anyone about the sale.

When selling locally makes more sense

  • A newer phone. On a higher-value iPhone, one grade step is real money, and it helps to see how the grade was decided.
  • A damaged phone. We buy cracked and broken iPhones, and we'll show you exactly what the damage does to the grade.
  • You want a choice of payment. Cash in person, Zelle or Cash App (usually same day), or PayPal.
  • You'd rather not go anywhere. We can meet at a public spot near you, or you can ship it with a prepaid label we send.
  • You have several phones. The wholesale lot builder prices a whole lot at once.

How selling to iPhones.LA works

  1. Go to /sell, pick your device and answer four questions: model, storage, carrier lock and condition. The cash estimate appears on screen as you answer, in seconds.
  2. Sign out of iCloud and turn off Find My. Like a kiosk, we can't buy a phone that's still locked to an Apple Account. Our guide on preparing your iPhone before selling walks through it.
  3. Verify your IMEI or serial number before the meetup, so nobody wastes a trip.
  4. Meet at our secured facility or a public spot near you in LA or Orange County, or ship it in.
  5. Get paid the moment the phone checks out.

There's no obligation at any point. Nothing is committed until you say so. If you're still weighing every option, including marketplace apps and mail-in buyers, our guide to selling an iPhone in Los Angeles covers them all, and why mail-in buyers lower your offer explains how the mail-in model differs from both.
