Where to Buy a Used iPhone in Los Angeles, and What to Check
The places to buy a used iPhone in Los Angeles, what each one leaves you to check, and how to get a tested phone picked up, delivered or shipped.
On this page
Los Angeles has no shortage of used iPhones. There are thousands listed on any given day, from parking lot sales to repair counters to online stores. The prices are often closer together than they look. What really differs is how much checking is left to you, and who you can call if the phone turns out to be wrong a week later.
This guide walks through the main places people in LA buy a used iPhone, what each one leaves for you to check, and how buying from us works. We are a used Apple shop based in Long Beach, so we will say plainly where we fit and where we do not.
The main places to buy a used iPhone in LA
| Where | What you check yourself | If something is wrong later |
|---|---|---|
| A private sale on a marketplace app | Everything: locks, battery, IMEI, every button | Usually nobody to call |
| A repair shop or small phone store | Depends on the shop; ask what they test | Their own policy, if they have one |
| A carrier or big store selling refurbished phones | Little, if the program is clear about what it replaced | The program's warranty |
| Apple's own refurbished store online | Little | Apple's limited warranty |
| A local used Apple shop that lists each phone | The listing tells you what was checked; confirm it at pickup | The shop's written warranty |
Private sales
A private sale can be the lowest price in the city, and plenty of them go fine. But every check happens in a parking lot, with a seller who wants to leave. You are the one who confirms the phone is not locked to someone else's Apple Account, not reported lost or stolen, not tied to a carrier you do not use, and not hiding a weak battery. If something turns up next week, the seller has usually moved on.
If you go this way, take our used iPhone checklist with you, and run the IMEI before you travel. What an IMEI check tells you explains each result.
Repair shops and small stores
A good repair shop knows phones well. Ask two questions before you pay: what did you test, and were any parts replaced? A phone with a replacement screen or battery is not a bad buy, but it should be priced like one, and iPhones list their repairs in Settings, General, About, under Parts and Service History. Apple explains each label on its Parts and Service History page.
Refurbished programs
Refurbished means different things to different sellers. Some programs replace the battery and the outer shell, some only clean and test. Read what the program replaced and how long its warranty runs. The price usually sits closer to new, and so does the peace of mind.
What a safe used iPhone looks like
Wherever you buy, the same five things decide whether a used iPhone is a good buy:
- No Activation Lock. The phone is signed out of the previous owner's Apple Account, so it can be set up as yours.
- A clean IMEI. It has not been reported lost or stolen or blocked by a carrier.
- The carrier you need. Unlocked works on any carrier. A carrier-locked phone works only on its carrier until that carrier unlocks it. Carrier locked vs unlocked explains the difference.
- An honest battery reading. The maximum capacity number in Settings, and on recent models the cycle count. Used iPhone battery health explains what the numbers mean.
- A description that matches. Cracks, repairs and a phone that has been opened should all be on the listing, not discovered later.
Buying a used iPhone from iPhones.LA
We buy iPhones from people across Los Angeles and Orange County, check every one ourselves, and sell them on our shop. Here is what that means for you as a buyer.
- Each listing is one phone. Its own photos, taken here, its own grade and its own battery reading as a number. A new arrival that is still on a stock image of its model says so on the listing until its own photos are up.
- The IMEI is checked before it is listed. The result covers lost or stolen reports, carrier blocks, Find My and the carrier lock, and the listing shows the result and the date. When a check has not been done, the listing shows a dash, never a tick.
- iCloud and device management are checked on the bench. Those are the two things that make a phone useless to a new owner, however good it looks.
- The grade comes from a written table. Cracked glass, display damage or a faulty camera decide the grade the same way every time. We do sell phones with cracks or worn batteries, graded and described as such and priced for it. Sealed, open box or used explains every word on a listing.
- A 60-day warranty on factory hardware defects comes with every used or open box device. A new, factory sealed iPhone comes with Apple's one-year limited warranty instead.
Pickup, delivery or shipping
You choose how the phone reaches you at checkout.
- Free pickup in Long Beach, usually the same or next day. We text you the exact spot with your time, and you can check the phone over before you leave.
- Local delivery across Los Angeles and Orange County, same day or next day, to a public place near your address. The price is set by distance from Long Beach, and checkout shows the map and your price before you pay.
- Shipping anywhere in the US at a flat rate, insured for what you paid, with a signature required and tracking sent to you.
You pay online by card or Apple Pay through Stripe, with the card processing charge shown on its own line before you pay. For a pickup, you can pay in cash or by Zelle when we meet instead, with no card fee. We never ask anyone to send money to a stranger first.
The whole process, from signing in to the handoff, is in how buying from iPhones.LA works.

Have an old iPhone to sell first?
You do not have to sell it somewhere else. You can trade it toward one of ours and get a trade-in bonus on top of its value, or simply take cash for it on the sell page. To see what we pay first, every model has its own page, such as the iPhone 14 or the iPhone 15 Pro.
Shop hand-tested used iPhones
Every device IMEI checked, battery health shown. Pickup in Long Beach, local delivery, or shipping anywhere in the US.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to buy a used iPhone on a marketplace app?
It can be, if you do every check yourself before paying: the IMEI, Activation Lock, the carrier lock, the battery and the hardware. The risk is that there is usually nobody to call if something turns up later.
Can I see the iPhone before I pay?
Yes. Choose pickup in Long Beach and pay in cash or by Zelle when we meet, after you have looked the phone over. A pay at pickup request does not hold the phone, so another buyer can still take it until we confirm your time.
Do you deliver used iPhones in Los Angeles?
Yes. Local delivery covers Los Angeles and Orange County, usually the same or next day, to a public place near your address. Checkout shows the price for your address before you pay.
What warranty comes with a used iPhone from iPhones.LA?
Every used or open box device comes with a 60-day warranty on factory hardware defects. A new, factory sealed iPhone comes with Apple's one-year limited warranty instead.
Can I trade in my old iPhone toward one of yours?
Yes. Pick the phone you want, describe yours, and we add a trade-in bonus to its value. If ours costs less than your trade-in is worth, we pay you the difference in cash.
